How did Halloween Start?
- There are three overall phases: initial beliefs, the further development under the Influence of Catholicism, secularization in the USA
- The celebration that is the original precursor to Halloween was a Celtic holiday called Samhain. The Celts believed that, in the fall, the line between spirits and this world became very thin. Dead people would come back as ghosts. In order to frighten away the dead people, the people had a variety of customs and practices to accomplish just that, including dressing up as a dead person to confuse the spirit and send it away.

- As the practice further spread, and crossed the Atlantic ocean, it became more secularized and now is what we have today, a time to dress up, ask for candy, and say "trick or treat".
