Additional Information

How did Halloween Start?

  • There are three overall phases: initial beliefs, the further development under the Influence of Catholicism, secularization in the USA
  • The celebration that is the original precursor to Halloween was a Celtic holiday called Samhain. The Celts believed that, in the fall, the line between spirits and this world became very thin. Dead people would come back as ghosts. In order to frighten away the dead people, the people had a variety of customs and practices to accomplish just that, including dressing up as a dead person to confuse the spirit and send it away.
  • As Christianity in the form of Catholicism spread, the ideas morphed into doing things to get a soul out of purgatory. One of the customs that emerged was dressing up like the dead person and going door to door to beg for coins, food or other rewards in exchange for prayers for the dead.
  • As the practice further spread, and crossed the Atlantic ocean, it became more secularized and now is what we have today, a time to dress up, ask for candy, and say "trick or treat".
  • Today, October 31 has a curious mixture of connotations inherent to its existence. First there is Halloween, which appears externally to celebrate the dark side. Simultaneously, the Latino community celebrates Dia de los Muertos, where those who have gone before are remembered and celebrated, often in the cemetery where they are buried. Then the next day, there is All Saint's Day, typically honoring the saints in religious circles. Many people today participate only in "trick or treat" on Halloween, Oct 31, without recognizing the religious history behind the practice.
  • Whether you think of the end of October as a Day of the dead, or a day for saints, or a day only for 'trick or treat", Gumballs.com can provide stuffed toys in several shapes and sizes that are suitable for the Halloween portion of the season.
